In 1983 a few gays and lesbians here in San Diego just stepped out and founded the Live and Let Live Alano Club right in the center of Hillcrest on Fourth Avenue.
Money was tight, but the spirit of recovery made our sanctuary come true. A safe place to hang out, have recovery meetings, social events and even meet other scared and lonely people new to sobriety. The coffee bar was a safe place to be when all else failed. Even then, not everyone who walked through the doors stayed sober, but they had an experience of what it could be like free of alcohol and drugs.
The Live and Let Live Alano Club has been, and is today, 27 years later a smashing success. It serves a vital purpose in our LGBT community. It has never failed to be a leader to support addicts in recovery, It is a model known throughout our nation on how to meet and support the very special needs for some of the finest people on earth.
This year we are entering the second quarter century of operation. One in which we will continue to be a champion leader in giving hope and support for the ever growing LGBT community in recovery.
As we celebrate our first quarter century and our achievements, we also must plan for our future and the changing needs in our community. Alcoholism affects the gay and lesbian population to a much greater extent than the population at large. And the dramatic rise of methamphetamine abuse and addition in our community is exacting a terrible cost in ruined and lost lives.
We want to do more, and with your help, we can. The Live & Let Live Alano Club is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit.Your gift of financial support for our growing operations is fully tax deductible and will assure that the club that helped you or a loved one to sober living will continue to build hope, build dreams and change lives
